6.2 Who Do We Activate and When Do We Activate?

Without structure and a clear process that is exercised and improved, someone who believes they need to be (or who truly should be) involved can get left out. At best, this results in executives feeling they’re out of the loop. It can also turn your crisis avoidance efforts into a misstep or missed opportunities. [See kidnapping example in section 4.1.4].

Even more important than having a structured crisis team in place and prepared is for the entire leadership team within the organization to know who is on this team (or who their representative is) as well as what types of incidents require reporting and the thresholds for reporting.

Thresholds that identify situations that “have the potential to”

cost X amount of money

injure customers, neighbors, or employees

negatively impact brand or reputation or relationships with stakeholders...
